Booties/ Ankle Boots

viktorandrolf

The first name, which comes to mind when you talk about shoe trends for 2010, is booties. Also a slang for a “hot girlfriend’, the amalgamation of shoe and boots, the booties are haute this year. Booties are not only comfortable but also look chic and stylish. Moreover, they are available in different versions ranging from fancy, retro, trendy, and sleek. They would go with anything you wear, be it skirt, pants, jeans to dresses and would up the style quotient by high measures. You could go for suede booties, booties with bows, with open toes, strapped booties, with platform, with ties, cutout booties, ruffled ones, velvet lace ups, cage booties, and even with feathers and glitters. The best buy of booties this year would be from Chloe, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Pucci, Marni and Calvin Klein, Nina Ricci.

High Heel Platform Sandals

shoes

While the last year was all about soaring heights with heels, this year is about supporting the heels with platforms. The platform heels with 4 inches or more are about to rule the roost this fall and summer. These platform heels not only look chic and sexy but also are not as uncomfortable as stilettos. The colors that would be the rage this season for high heel platforms sandals especially in spring are bright colors like cherry red, fuchsia, turquoise, silver, gold, and yellow. Subtle colors like white, beige, black, grey, auburn etc will also be seen especially in early winters. Burgundy, coral reds, orange shades, sandals with blue tones etc will also be ‘in’ for 2010. Sling back platforms, peep-toed platforms, and sandals with bows in leather or suede, platforms with sequins, platforms with straps, wraparound strappy sandals, cage sandals, croc embossed, etc not only look chic and sophisticated but also a little bit racy. The best buys for these kinds of shoes are Macy’s (especially the Paris Hilton brand), Valentino, Fendi, Olympia Maxine’s collection of sandals, Nanette Lepore’s, Gucci, Miu Miu etc.

High Boots

Be it knee-high boots or thigh high ones, the boots are all over the ramps and in almost all the fall and autumn collections of designer this year. Be it the Louis Vuitton’s fall collection, Prada’s, Fendi’s, Chanel’s, everywhere the winter collection of shoes consisted of high boots. Although winter collections are mostly drab as compared to the spring and summer trends, this year the dowdiness has seen backstage and many outrageous yet chic, traditional and sexy changes has been seen in the shoes ala carte 2010. Knee high or over knee or thigh high boots in leather, suede, shearling, drap, lace or silk with round or tapering toes in olive green, maroons, brown, black, grey, and even gold color would be in rage for a “stand out” look. You could pair them with short dresses, minis, skinny jeans, tights, or even long socks. Boots by Louis Vuitton, Loewe, Hermes, Giuseppe Zanotti, Lacoste, Alexander McQueen, Mark Jacobs, etc would be the best buy for 2010.

fashion woman shoes

A study by the U.K. Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists has revealed that pregnant women may be risking their foot health by trying to imitate celebrity fashion trends in footwear.
Fashion_Shoes_High_Heels_Sandals
In their study of 1,000 pregnant women, researchers found that half of the women felt they needed to keep up with fashion trends in footwear during their pregnancy. Over a third wore high heels during pregnancy and two-thirds wore flip-flop sandals.

Women-Footwear-Fashion-Shoes

Both types of shoes have been found to cause foot problems. High heels alter a woman’s posture, while flip-flops do not provide enough foot and arch support.

Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, says, “If you’re pregnant choose well fitted, round toed and low heeled, comfortable shoes with straps to support the foot and ankle and help minimize discomfort and prevent the prospect of long term damage.”

She also adds, “Many of the pregnant celebrities you see wearing high heels in magazines are attending events, so [pregnant women should] try to keep [their] high heeled, high fashion shoes for a special occasion and stick to a more supportive shoe on a daily basis.”

She is most famous for her role as dowdy Betty Suarez in U.S. TV show Ugly Betty.

But America Ferrera today showed she has once and for all said goodbye to her on-screen alter ego as she arrived at the opening night of the Edinburgh Film Festival wearing a chic, form-fitting black dress.
With no sign of Betty’s infamous braces or glasses, Ferrera looked every inch the Hollywood starlet in the asymetrical one-shouldered Alice and Olivia number, which she teamed with snake-print heels.

cute pumpsThis is the final post of a three-part series, based on Bad Shoes & The Women Who Love Them, on using your head when choosing your shoes.

The other day, I popped into Intermix, the über-trendy, boho luxe boutique chain that sells grown women jumpshorts and sequined leggings. In the shoe department, every shoe had either a five-inch heel — or no heel at all. The choice was between sky-high or pancake-flat. Dominatrix-inspired stilettos with cage-like straps or ballet flats with a bit of frou-frou to peek out from beneath your skinny jean hem.

Before I could say “Brian Atwoods are the new Louboutins” and walk out, I remembered that the selection is more or less the same at most fashionable shoe departments this season. No doubt you, too, have attempted to buy shoes you could wear for at least three hours without wincing and have rationalized that a one-inch platform on a four-inch heel transforms the height into a mere three inches, and how bad could that really be?

Don’t worry! I feel your foot pain. And I understand: You want something chic and show-stopping, sexy and sensational. I am here to help you be a sane shoe shopper.

Yes, you know that “bad” shoes — with a high heel and a narrow toebox — will deform your feet if you wear them on a regular basis. But “good” shoes often look like something you wear with a housecoat while you refill the bowl of hard candies. What should you do?

cute pumps

1. Know that there are many, many shoes out there that are both stylish and sensible. You have to find the ones that are right for you. Allot some time for your search. Do not give up hope. If you persist, you will be rewarded.

2. Visit a store that specializes in old-fashioned, sit-and-fit service. Ask a salesperson to measure your feet. Don’t presume that you know your shoe size. Your feet change over time. Make sure to find out your shoe width.

3. Don’t buy shoes if you can’t wiggle your toes in them. Look for a toe box that is rounded or squared with plenty of wiggle room.

4. For everyday walking, choose a shoe with a heel between a half-inch to an inch.

5. Do not assume that flats are better than high heels. In fact, often they are not. Soles that are completely flat can cause feet to pronate (roll inward when walking). Look for flats that have a contoured footbed or built-in arch support so that your ankles and feet are stable. Many styles have a strap across the midfoot, which holds your foot in place.

It’s a sheer delight to see celebrities sporting their dresses made by their designers. It’s always a girl thing.
